Seal Tech understands the importance of having a clean and aesthetically pleasing outdoor living area. Decks, fencing, pergolas, and other wood structures are an expensive addition to any home, and it is important to keep up with regular maintenance to protect your investment and prevent your wood structures from deteriorating pre-maturely. At Seal Tech we pride ourselves on providing top quality workmanship coupled with a high standard of customer service. Our goal is to provide the proper advice and technical knowledge to help you achieve your goals in a way that will exceed your expectations within a budget that you feel comfortable with.

As with any home improvement, it is important to choose a contractor who specializes in what you are looking to have done; we are the trusted and go to company for the restoration of wood decks, fencing, and other wood structures as well as the cleaning and sealing of interlock, pattern concrete and natural stone designs. There are many people who dabble in this field and the repercussions of a bad job can be irreversible or extremely costly to fix if possible. Be confident in your choice; see our testimonials(make it a link) for unsolicited customer feedback. It is important to note all wooden structures such as decks, fencing, pergolas and sheds must be clean and free form dirt, mould, mill glaze, and other foreign debris or build up.

Wood stain is meant to penetrate wood surfaces; if any dirt, mould or mill glaze is present at the time of sealing or staining the wood, not only will it be sealed in (affecting its appearance), but it will also lead to premature failure and deterioration of the stain. In order to avoid this, it is imperative to ensure a clean sound surface before you apply a sealer or stain. There are a variety of stains and sealers to choose from, so it is also important to choose a stain that is intended for our climate and will hold up to Canadian weather and season changes.

Why Stain?

Untreated or aged wood is subject to:

  • Mildew
  • Greying & Fading
  • Cracking & Cupping
  • Ultra Violet (UV) damage
  • Splintering
  • Fungus
  • Blotchiness
Treated wood provides:

  • Protection from staining
  • Protection from weathering
  • Protection from mould, mildew, and fungus
  • UV protection
  • Enables easier cleaning and maintenance
  • Prolongs the life of the structure
  • Enhanced beauty instead of an eyesore

How Can We Help?

By enlisting our professional revitalization process, we can bring your fence, deck, shed or other wooden structure back to life, bringing a sense of pride back to your yard for years to come, while prolonging the life of the structure and enhancing the appearance and property value of your home in the process.

What to Expect:

  • Application of a high pressure cleaning system in order to remove existing dirt, fungus, mildew, mould and other atmospheric pollutants using environmentally sensitive cleaning products
  • Inspect the existing fasteners and reapply as needed to ensure the construction is sound
  • Sand surfaces to remove loose wood fibres and prepare the deck for the chosen stain/sealer (see choosing a stain below for more information)
  • Apply a coat of desired stain/sealer (a wide variety of colour choices are available)

Choosing a Stain

Types of Stain:

Clear Sealer:  This is a sealer that will not change the appearance of your wooden structure. Generally, this sealer will not last quite as long as other sealers or stains as a result of the lack of pigmentation (the additive that creates the colour) as this helps protect against harmful UV rays as well as mask some of the accumulation of dirt. However, if a natural look is what you desire, this is definitely the way to go.

Semi-Transparent Stain:  This stain provides a bridge between a clear sealer and a semi-solid stain. It will give a translucent appearance to the wood, allowing the natural grain and texture of the wood to show throw, while still allowing you to give the desired colour to your structure or fence. If you desire colour while still allowing the natural beauty of the wood to show through, this is the ideal stain for you.

Semi-Solid or Solid Stains: These stains are naturally more solid in appearance, resulting in a more paint like look, but in the form of stain intended for exterior wood surfaces. These stains offer the most protection for a deck, fence, or other wood structure. This is a result of the level of pigment, and hence UV (ultra violate) protection, contained in the stain. If you want a painted, solid colour, appearance on your wood structure and most protection from the elements then this is the stain for you.

It is important to note that the life expectancy and weathering of decks, fencing, pergolas and sheds will vary based on a number of environmental factors including (but not limited to) elevation and air flow, sun exposure, surrounding vegetation (such as trees and shrubs), foot traffic, precipitation, and the hot and cold cycles of changing seasons. Mother Nature’s job is to break down material, so depending on varying environmental factors beyond our control, you can expect the stain or sealer on your horizontal surfaces to last from 1 to 5 years and on vertical surfaces up to 10 years (have a professional advise you on your options and what you can expect).

Note:  Actual appearance of stain colours when applied will vary based on species of wood, age, condition, number of coats, and lighting.
